iTunes 9

  • What? The latest version of iTunes
  • When? Available Now
  • How Much? FREE
  • Where? Download here
  • Why is it Cool? Apple's latest version of iTunes brings many new features and refinements that make it better than ever. The entire application has been redesigned to be cleaner, easier to navigate and easier to find new media from the store. iTunes LP and iTunes Extras provide extra features for your music and movies such as lyrics, artwork, photos, and special video features. Genius Mixes groups your songs that go great together and plays them with one click. Home Sharing allows you to easily transfer media from all the computers in your home to one another. Improved syncing allows you to arrange your apps in iTunes just the way you want and then sync that configuration to your iPhone or iPod Touch. iTunes 9 is a great update to the software you already know and love. iPod Shuffle(3rd Generation)

  • What? Apple's latest super small, inexpensive iPod
  • Where? Apple.com or retailers nationwide
  • When? Available online now. In stores soon
  • How Much? $79
  • Why is it cool? Apple's latest version of the iPod Shuffle is dramatically smaller than its predecessor, can store up to 1000 songs, and adds a new VoiceOver feature. With VoiceOver, the Shuffle can announce song titles, artist names, or playlist names. It even tells you when your battery needs charging. VoiceOver is designed to make it easier for you to navigate your music since the Shuffle doesn't have a screen. The new Shuffle also lacks buttons on the iPod itself. You control it with buttons on the earbud cord. This could be problematic if you want to use earbuds or headphones other than the included set but I'm sure Apple or a third party accessory maker will make an adapter of for this. Amazon Mp3

  • What? Online Music Store
  • When? Available Now
  • Where? Check it out here
  • How Much? Varies
  • Why is it cool? Amazon's Mp3 store is the absolute best place to legally purchase music online. All of the songs are D.R.M.(Digital Rights Management) free which means they have no restrictions. You can play them anywhere on any device and even burn them to a CD an unlimited amount of times. Also, Amazon's pricing is by far the best in the business. Most new songs cost $.89 or $.99 each and older, less popular music can be found even cheaper. Albums start at $4.99 with most new releases starting at only $8.99! You purchase the songs just as you would any other item on the site and Amazon provides software to make downloading the music very easy.

Stop worrying about "the feds" knocking down you door for downloading music illegally and support you favorite bands! Give Amazon mp3 a shot.

Last.FM

  • What? A social network focused entirely on music
  • Where? www.last.fm
  • How Much? FREE (ad supported)
  • Why is it cool? Last.FM is a wonderful tool for discovering new music. You can connect to your friends and track what they have been listening to as well as view complete strangers profiles who have similar tastes as you. Last.FM even tracks your listening habits and learns your musical tastes. All of this tracking is done via the website or their "scrobbling" software that supports most major audio playback software (Windows Media, iTunes, etc.). This service can even track what you've been listening to on your iPod. Once Last.FM know what you like, it can recommend similar artist and songs.
